Character and Setting

My kindergarten classes have been spending some time learning about characters and setting in a story. We used the story Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. First, we reviewed what jobs the author and illustrator do. Then I introduced our two new words, character and setting. We made some predictions based on the cover of the book. What characters do you think could be in the book? Where do you think this story takes place? With those questions in mind the students listened to the story. They gave a thumbs up every time a new character was introduced into the story. Then we added each character to a list.

The following week the students retold the story upon entering the library. Then they were given the handout below to record what characters are in the story and where it takes place. They did a great job!
